I subsequently presented a design drawing with precisely plotted linework to a major client and began the review with a statement that the design could still be revised as the project was only in the Schematic Design phase he replied that he understood and we proceeded. I did not then - nor do I now - understand why this perception of a drawing mattered. The lead designer wanted us to use a program that would create wavy lines from dwg files so clients would think the designs were evolving and revisions could still be made. This was true of the lead designer/spec writer and the two project managers. Needless to say, perhaps, this was not entirely true, as everyone had a desktop computer, but not everyone used their computer. ![]() In other words, they were up-to-date with the latest technology, and did not need to produce documents by hand. I worked for a small firm in Mississippi from 1991 to 1993 that promoted itself to prospective clients as being fully computerized. I hope that we will continue to receive advice on the subject from others who have found ways to provide a hand drawn appearance to CAD drawings.-Ĭollaborative Design Group-Architecture & Interiors, LLC And I doubt that clients will want to pay for the extra time it would take to perform a manual task such as that if a computer could do it in a few clicks. Not everyone is blessed with wonderful hand drawing skills, nor do we have the time to do it that way. I will look forward to more advice on the subject.Īnd if I was one of the owners of your business, I would not appreciate an employee of mine making fun of another professional with a legitimate question about an efficient and fast solution to a problem that many of us have. I appreciated the question and am interested in using the advice being given to give my plans a more hand drawn appearance when appropriate, with the speed and flexibility of the computer. And if you are proposing multiple options, the time involved can be significant to trace everything. That might work for a small plan, but when you are doing a large project like a 20,000 square foot house, drawing on trace is not the best option, and the undo command if you make a mistake is non existent. I do not think the comment about freehand tracing was called for.
